CORN BREEDING DEPARTMENT
A strategic direction in corn hybrids breeding is to supply the Ukrainian and the CIS markets with competitive heavy-yielding hybrids that have advantages in terms of all agricultural characteristics.
The major areas of corn breeding in our Research Institute are the following:
1.Creation of hybrids, providing a cost-effective receipt of corn grain in current difficult climatic Prairie conditions and increasing yield capacity up to 9 – 10 tons per hectare;
2.Breeding of highly competitive hybrids of early-maturing, middle-early and mid-maturing groups that guarantee low harvest moisture content of grain for the harvesting by a direct threshing method for forest steppe. The use of such crops in production will allow to reduce costs for drying the crops.
3.Creation of new hybrids of early-maturing and middle-early groups for Woodlands with an inadequate temperature conditions, ripping guaranteed up to direct threshing harvest moisture content of 25 – 28% with yield of grain up to 13 – 15 t/ha.
The latest achievements of science and types of organization in the sector adopted in top world's companies are used at the Research Institute of Agrarian Business for the successful competitive breeding.
Costs optimization at the Institute has been achieved by using the up-to-date breeding equipment. High-quality sowing of breeding and control nursery gardens is provided by the latest special breeding HALDRUP seed drill, which sets the required density of plants and eliminates manual labour. Harvesting at experimental fields is carried out by a single-purpose WINTERSTEIGER combine harvester. This machine performs calculation of the harvest moisture and yield of grain along with threshing of each plot.
The total area of plots for breeding amounts to 38 – 40 hectares annually. High competitiveness of the Institute is achieved due to modern methods of creation of original material for crop hybrids, including the winter nursery garden in the Southern hemisphere (Chile). The nursery garden allows to double accelerate the creation of inbreeded corn lines, their sterile countertypes, revitalizers and maintainers as well as accelerates proliferation of new material for promising hybrids.
Achievements of the Corn Breeding Laboratory
Corn hybrids of the Research Institute of Agrarian Business and Stepna Agricultural Corporation are sown by the largest agrarians of Ukraine, Belarus and Russia annually. The total area of annual seeding exceeds 1 mln of hectares. Over the years of the Research Subdivision work, the best corn hybrids have been created:
